CHINESE MILITARY OFFICIAL CONFIRMS FIRST AIRCRAFT CARRIER
June 10, 2011

Just over six weeks after an official visit to the U.S., Chinese Chief of General Staff Chen Bingde (陳炳德) has confirmed earlier news reports of building the navy’s first aircraft carrier. The aircraft carrier was acquired via a Macau-based company from Ukraine in 1999 and after negotiations was transported through the Bosporus Straight and arrived in the port of Dalian in 2002. There are reports that the ship may be commissionable as early as 2012.

Interest in Chinese naval activities is compounded by the announcement of a naval exercise being performed in international waters of the Pacific Ocean. The exercise evokes mixed feelings amongst countries of the Pacific.
