THE U.S.-CHINA POLICY FOUNDATION HOLDS 19TH ANNUAL GALA DINNER

Mayflower Renaissance Hotel, Washington, DC
November 19th, 2014

On November 19th, the U.S.-China Policy Foundation (USCPF) held a black-tie gala at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington, DC to celebrate its 19th Anniversary. Distinguished guests from Congress, members of the U.S.-China business community, officials from the Chinese Embassy, and local scholars all attended the event to congratulate our honorees, listen to our speakers, and share their interest for improving U.S.-China relations.

The event began with a cocktail reception in The Chinese Ballroom. In honor of the 35th anniversary of U.S.-China relations, which coincided with this year’s gala, Xinhua News Agency provided a photo display depicting key moments in U.S.-China diplomatic relations. During the reception, USCPF had the opportunity to interview some of our guests and sponsors for a special episode of our weekly television program, China Forum.

After the reception, guests moved into the Grand Ballroom. The gala chair, Ambassador J. Stapleton Roy, provided welcome remarks. Roy served as the U.S. Ambassador to China from 1991 to 1995. He was also played a pivotal role in the negotiations leading to the 1979 normalization of U.S.-China diplomatic relations.

After dinner, former U.S. Ambassador to China James Sasser presented the Global Leadership Award to Senator Chris Dodd, Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).  Senator Dodd spoke about the important role Hollywood and cultural exchange to the future of U.S.-China relations. Text of his remarks can be found here.

Ambassador Roy presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Ambassador Chas W. Freeman, Jr, who then gave a few remarks about his long experience in U.S.-China relations. Ambassador Freeman is a former U.S. Assistant Secretary Defense, former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and career diplomat who served as principal interpreter during President Nixon’s famous trip to China.

Recognizing the importance of U.S.-China ties not just to business and diplomatic relations but to the relationship as a whole, and taking advantage of our location in the nation’s capital, the U.S.-China Policy Foundation was happy to be joined by guests from both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Chinese Embassy. Congresswoman Grace Meng and Congressman Brad Sherman both shared a few remarks.

Ambassador Cui Tiankai, Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., gave the keynote speech. Having just returned from China, Ambassador Cui was able to provide first-hand insight into the APEC Summit and meetings between Presidents Obama and Xi that had just taken place in Beijing. He also provided his own views on the prospects for U.S.-China relations and how the two countries can move forward.

USCPF President, Dr. Chi Wang, gave the closing remarks. He emphasized the importance of the U.S.-China relationship and the work the Foundation does. He also thanked our sponsors for their generous support. For the past 19 years, the U.S.-China Policy Foundation has been the only organization in our nation’s capital solely dedicated to increasing mutual understanding and cooperation between the U.S. and China. We have proven experience building bridges and improving relations, making real and tangible strides toward bettering this vital relationship. Without the support of our sponsors, the work USCPF does would not be possible.

Be sure to watch a special Gala Dinner episode of USCPF’s weekly television show China Forum for interviews with some of the event’s distinguished guests. The complete episode can be viewed here.
