A Selection of Paintings and Calligraphy by Pu Ru
Confucius Institute U.S. Center
Washington, D.C.

On Wednesday, May 10, 2017, the U.S.-China Policy Foundation hosted a reception celebrating selected paintings and calligraphy by esteemed Chinese artist Pu Ru. The exhibit, “Hermit of the West Mountain: a selection of paintings and calligraphy by Pu Ru.” A brochure of the exhibit, including pictures of the paintings displayed, can be found here.

Pu Ru (1896-1963) was a member of the Qing royal family at the time Imperial China was overthrown. Pu Ru adjusted to his change in circumstances by retreating to a monastery in the West Mountains and mastering Chinese traditional painting, calligraphy, and scholarship. He is considered one of the last true Chinese literati and artist scholars. Pu Ru is one of the most renowned and accomplished 20th century Chinese artists. The collector is proud to present the first solo exhibition of Pu Ru’s work in the U.S. The exhibit displays a wide range of pieces, highlighting the versatility and skill of the artist, and offers a strong look at Chinese traditional art.

Dr. Ying-Chen Peng, a professor of Chinese art history from American University, gave a short lecture on the importance of Chinese art and the significance of Pu Ru’s work. Dr. Peng gave a wonderful lecture that spoke to all three of Pu Ru’s identities: aristocrat, artist, and mentor. Pu Ru was a master of many styles of calligraphy and carried on both northern and southern traditions of Chinese ink painting. Dr. Peng showed a short video clip of Pu Ru demonstrating the traditional way to paint a classical Chinese scene of a scholar sitting under a pine tree. Dr. Peng also discussed some of the paintings featured in the exhibit. One in particular was the circular palindrome poem which shows Pu Ru’s extensive knowledge of classical Chinese literature. A full video of the talk can be viewed here.

USCPF was happy to host this event celebrating the work of Pu Ru, and would like to thank all the participants and guests for attending. We would also like to thank the Confucius Institute U.S. Center for providing the gallery space for this exhibit. If you are interesting in viewing these pieces, they are on display until May 20th.
