On September 8, 2000, the U.S.–China Policy Foundation, cooperating with the National Committee on U.S.–China Relations, the U.S.–China Business Council and others helped to organize a luncheon event in honor of Chinese President Jiang Zemin at the Waldorf Austoria Hotel in New York, during the historic U.N. Millennium Summit of world leaders. The Honorable Henry Kissinger delivered the opening remarks before President Jiang gave his address in English. President Jiang spoke of trends towards multipolarization, China’s accession to the WTO, the need for stable U.S.–China relations based on mutual respect, Taiwan’s status, and improvements in the overall quality of life for the Chinese people.
