Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to kick off a week-long visit to China. As the first senior official to visit Beijing in the wake of Standard & Poor’s downgrade of the U.S. sovereign credit rating, Biden is expected to offer assurances on the safety of China’s holdings of U.S. debt and the stability of the dollar. While economic issues top the agenda, Biden is also slated to discuss the full breadth of issues in the U.S.-China relationship, including North Korea and Iran’s nuclear weapons programs, arms sales to Taiwan, and security issues in the Asia Pacific region, according to U.S. government officials.

Biden’s visit also paves the way for Chinese vice president Xi Jinping to visit the U.S. later this year and provides an opportunity for the U.S. and China to deepen bilateral relations and further exchange. A priority for Biden’s visit will be to build a relationship with the next generation of Chinese leadership and forge ties with Xi, the projected successor of President Hu Jintao. Biden is expected have extensive talks with Xi and is also due to meet with President Hu and Premier Wen Jiabao while in Beijing. On Friday, Biden will depart for the western province of Sichuan, which was devastated by the 2008 earthquake, and be accompanied by Xi. Biden and Xi will share an informal dinner in the provincial capital, Chengdu, before Biden’s trip takes him to Mongolia and Japan.
